Which digital tools exist to help you identify false and misleading information?
Journalism schools and universities are of course training future professionals to combat disinformation online but many tools have also be developed for active professionals.
There are several organisations who offer information and training programmes to empower journalists and boost the fight against disinformation. Here are just a few examples: First Draft is a non-profit organisation which mission is to ‘protect communities from harmful misinformation’. They work to “empower society with the knowledge, understanding, and tools needed to outsmart false and misleading information”. Thanks to their global network of journalists, they investigate and verify emerging stories, conduct research projects and develop training programs. The UNESCO also developed a resource “for all those who practice or teach journalism in the Digital Age”. Written by experts in the fight against disinformation, this handbook explores the very nature of journalism with modules on why trust matters; thinking critically about how digital technology and social platforms are conduits of the information disorder; fighting back against disinformation and misinformation through media and information literacy; fact-checking 101; social media verification and combatting online abuse. The European Commission has also developed a number of initiatives to tackle disinformation For more tools that will help you fight disinformation, you can also take a look at RAND, which brings together researchers and “utilizes analytical tools and methods to develop objective policy solutions”. RAND is non-profit, nonpartisan and committed to the public interest.
There are new tools and methodologies popping up every day. It is worth subscribing to newsletters and notifications to be kept in the loop, as for instance on firstdraftnews.org. You can also watch the presentation by Jago Kosolosky, chief editor of Mo Magazine, on combating disinformation online at one of the Creative Skills Europe’s digital skills webinar (see link below).
